Subject: Forget BlackBerry PlayBook 2, CEO claims all tablets are doomed
BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins has seemingly ruled out a sequel to the company's 2011 PlayBook tablet by revealing that he doesn't see a future for any tablet device beyond 2018. Ever since BlackBerry 10 was launched, analysts and tech journalists have focused not on whether a tablet device featuring the new operating system would be released, but the when. However, speaking in an interview with news service Bloomberg, the BlackBerry boss claimed that there will soon be no need for tablets at all. "In five years I don't think there'll be a reason to have a tablet anymore," he said. "Maybe a big screen in your workspace, but not a tablet as such. Tablets themselves are not a good business model." That's not to say that the firm will concentrate solely on smartphones. It will explore other forms of mobile computing, an area it feels it can do well in. "In five years, I see BlackBerry to be the absolute leader in mobile computing... that's what we're aiming for," said Heins. "I want to gain as much market share as I can, but not by being a copycat." |
